How to be an Encourager: the Value of Recognizing Those Around You

How would your life be without the people around you? How would it look like without the support of family/friends/neighbors? Have you ever considered how much of who and what you are, you owe to the people around you? Have you ever thanked and encouraged them for this?

True encouragement is to stop and recognize the people that have helped us become who we are. To recognize what they do for us. We often take their presence in our life for granted, but what if that person wouldn’t have been there. How would we live? How could we get ourselves sorted?

It is important to also recognize them for all they’ve done for us. This doesn’t mean that we gather a crowd outside their house and organize the mayor to give a speech and a special token. It does mean, however, that from time to time we take time or make an effort to show our gratitude. Being grateful to these key people in our life is the best form of encouragement we can give them.

Gratefulness (or gratitude) is probably the best attitude we can take on in life. Coming from the Latin word gratia, gratefulness and the related graciousness and grace all imply something about kindness, generosity, receiving something for nothing, giving and receiving and the beauty of this. It takes our focus away from what is bothering us to what is truly important in life. Our focus also shifts from all that we don’t have to what we do have. It is an attitude of counting our blessings as opposed to worrying over our everyday needs or desires.

Only when we stop ourselves from focusing on our own needs, and we start enjoying what we already have, we can become truly grateful people. We can enjoy the people around us and the beauty displayed by others. As a result, by being grateful and encouraging those that helped us, we are encouraged ourselves.

Let’s be encouragers like flowers that spread beauty and a wonderful scent. There is no better scent we can spread than an attitude of gratefulness. Let’s change our focus from our own wants and take time to recognize the people that helped grow these flowers in our life. Let’s show them our gratitude.

Who knows, how many more flowers of encouragement will start growing in the gardens of others around us. Together we can create a see of color in our lives, spreading the scent of gratefulness.

Flowers growing, flowers blooming,

Displaying color, spreading scents with rife.

Seas of color, griefs consuming.

Attracting bees, birds – others spreading life.

Gratitude, grace, and gratefulness,

How can we respond, how can we react?

Some undeserved bestowed on us.

Be encouragers, who gratefully act.
